Cash Out 401k
A 401k plan is sponsored by the employers to save and invest for retirement. A person can have the option of early cash out 401k after being laid off from a job. It may seem the best solution to end your financial troubles and cash out your 401k but wait and check out the best options available for you.
If you do cash out without a valid reason, then a 10% penalty is incurred if you are under 55 and have no job. You also lose around 30-40% altogether in federal and state taxes. You are left with just a 60% of your total 401k which is not a very good investment at all.
Most 401k plan allows employees to borrow against their retirement a total of 50% or $50,000 which ever is less and lets you pay it back in a span of 5 years. This might be a good option for some without actually cashing out 401k. This loan is granted only if there are valid reasons like the purchase of a new home, medical bills, child education and mortgage payments.
One of the downside of taking out loan is that no interest will be added until and unless you pay off the amount in full. And if you are not able to pay the loan within the time allotted then you are charged the early withdrawal penalty and all the taxes as well.
Another option is to do a rollover to Roth IRA instead of cashing out 401k. This can be done online too without any fee of charge too but have to done within 60 days of receiving your distributions otherwise you have to pay penalties and taxes on funds not roll over from 401k. Its better to do a direct rollover IRA otherwise the IRS withheld 20% of your 401k for plan distributions.
It's really tempting to cash out your 401k money after you left a job. But this option should be at a last resort and be done only so after having discussions with your accountants where they will explain all the legal matters and various taxes cut off with you and find you the best available option.
